Native to Central and South Asia, Cannabis has been around for a very long time. Several records, as well as archeological evidences, link the plant to many religious rituals, often functioning as a hallucinogen that induces euphoric sensation in people. Nowadays, cannabis is slowly finding a place in modern medicine, being used as a general pain reliever, a muscle relaxant, a hunger stimulant, and even as a nausea reliever.

However, despite its newfound uses in medical practice, cannabis still remains to be a very controversial substance because of its historical uses and unwanted side effects. In general, Cannabis side effects can be classified into two categories. Based on duration, there are long-term and short-term side effects. Although the actual duration of cannabis intoxication depends on several factors such as potency of preparation, the amount taken and the individual’s metabolism, the average for short-term side effects lies somewhere between three to four hours. Check out this list of effects of Cannabis , which show how many ways you can be effected by smoking or consuming cannabis.

If the effects persist for more than this period and symptoms are recurring, they may be considered as long-term already. Short-term side Cannabis side effects include increase in heart rate, constriction of blood vessels in the eye and even drying of the mouth (somatic effects). They can also affect behavior and perception (psychoactive effects) as well as brain activity and nerve function (neurological effects). Other literatures include memory loss, attention deficiency, immune system disorders, and even chest colds, bronchitis, emphysema, and bronchial asthma.

Cannabinoids, the active compound in Cannabis, is basically the one responsible for most Cannabis side effects. This chemical component, as well as its many derivatives, affects the body, brain and nerves by attaching themselves to certain receptors in the body. By doing so, they not only block these receptors but also trigger chemical as well as neurological responses that are responsible for the high and altered state of consciousness that most Cannabis users experience.

Long-term Cannabis side effects, unfortunately, are not as well-studied as the short term effects. Several laws prohibit research on the long term effects of the use of Cannabis, so the data on this is not as extensive or as conclusive as the data for short-term. However, there are some countries that have a number of cases that provide certain connections between Cannabis and certain disorders. The few data collected on long term effects suggest a significant correlation between long term use of Cannabis and the development of anxiety, psychosis and even depression. In fact, in one particular analysis, it is even suspected to cause schizophrenia. Remember to see the full list of the effects of Cannabis.

Is there a link between cannabis and schizophrenia?

More and more case studies and research are proving that there is indeed a distinct connection between the two. In fact, cannabis and schizophrenia have been closely linked in several reviews, studies and articles. In a long-term study in New Zealand involving 1000 children (who are now adults), it showed that children who take Cannabis by the age of 15 were more prone to developing schizophrenia than those that didn’t by more than 300 percent.

In fact, a lot of those who started smoking Cannabis before the said age developed psychotic disorders by the age of 26, including schizophrenia. According to many psychiatrists, this particular vulnerability of teenagers might have a lot to do with brain development. Since the brain is still in the process of development during the teenage years – lasting sometimes up to the age of 20, considerable ‘neural pruning’ is still going on.

Substances such as cannabinoids, the active ingredient of Cannabis, can influence this process and has the potential to produce long-term psychological effects like schizophrenia. In a separate study conducted in Denmark, 535 patients treated for cannabis-induced psychotic symptoms were observed. As the team from Aarhus Psychiatric Hospital worked with the Danish Psychiatric Central Register, they discovered that 44.5% of those with cannabis induced psychotic symptoms were diagnosed with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders as well.

In a review of 35 studies published in The Lancet, the high risk of developing schizophrenia is doubled among the users who take Cannabis daily or weekly. It seems like Cannabis and schizophrenia really do have a close relationship with each other. However, that relationship is built on many different factors such as individual metabolism, tolerance, potency, and frequency of use.

All in all, there have been plenty of researches trying to establish Cannabis as a possible cause of schizophrenia. Unfortunately, results continue to remain inconclusive. In fact, the same conclusions were reached by the team of researchers led by Stanley Zammitt of Cardiff University. Their data did not overwhelmingly prove that cannabis indeed triggers schizophrenia.

However, the association between cannabis and schizophrenia is strong enough to warn young people about its dangers. This much should be enough. Even the most senior psychiatrists in Britain deem the drug to now be the “No 1 problem” facing mental health services. Psychiatrists are already treating Cannabis as a major factor, accounting for as much as 80 percent of schizophrenia cases.

Pregnancy is often a delicate stage in which the woman is advised to avoid drugs that can possibly harm the baby. Other prohibitions include smoking and alcohol drinking. The most common advice given in order to have a healthy pregnancy, labor and childbirth are:

Eating plenty of fresh and nutritious food

Drinking lots of water

Exercising regularly

Having a calm and balanced disposition

These conditions are necessary in order to give birth to a healthy child. These could also give a woman more chances of having normal deliveries in the future. Also, avoiding intake of drugs is usually and mainly advised, but there is a growing belief that cannabis and pregnancy go well together.

Cannabis and pregnancy is thought to be a good combination because the use of marijuana alleviates a number of discomforts and other problems associated during pregnancy. This is a lesser known fact that is recognized but undisclosed by the medical and herbalist community. For instance, nausea seems to respond very well to cannabis. This condition is present in almost all pregnancies and is usually the first sign that indicates a woman is pregnant. For some, the effects can be so trivial while others are so affected to the point wherein they have a hard time eating and drinking. Extreme cases require hospitalization and intravenous feeding for the entire duration of pregnancy. Most pregnant women turn to the intake of drugs to overcome the effects of nausea. But the cure is not guaranteed. In fact, taking drugs can bring more harm to the mother and the baby as exemplified by the thalidomide disaster in which a lot of women gave birth to badly deformed and unhealthy babies.

Cannabis and pregnancy on the other hand have no such harmful effects. Marijuana is a natural herb that has a lot of beneficial effects against severe morning sickness. It just so happened that the plant was previously abused, which gave it its bad reputation.

The good effects of cannabis and pregnancy are also ideal to learn for women who find it hard to get pregnant. This is because the herb has been found to help the female reproductive system achieve correct balance. This in turn promotes pregnancy, and a good mental disposition. Women who are out of balance are prone to a lot of emotional distress. This is a result of hormones fighting each other instead of being complementary. With the use of cannabis, these emotions are better kept under control, leaving the mother in a nice disposition throughout the day.

Cannabis has been closely linked to a lot of mental illnesses. In fact, it is presently considered as one of the greatest risk factors in the development of certain psychological conditions such as anxiety, psychosis and even depression. Among the mental illnesses associated with the prolonged use of Cannabis, depression seems to be one of the most directly influenced.

As seen in several cases, there is a significant correlation between Cannabis and depression in individuals that take or have taken marijuana for a long time. Here are just some of the studies that prove the link between Cannabis and depression. In a 7 year study of 1,600 teenage girls in Australia, it was shown that girls who took Cannabis daily were five times more likely to become depressed and five times more likely to develop anxiety disorders compared to those who did not use the drug.

On the other hand, those who did not take the drug everyday but used it at least once every week were still twice as likely to develop depression compared to those who do not take Cannabis at all.
A second study, this time by doctors in Sweden, confirmed previous research listing Cannabis as one of the risk factors in developing depression. This particular research involving 50,000 men showed that those who had used Cannabis in the late 1960s were more prone to developing depression, as well as schizophrenia, by as much as 30%.

They are convinced that Cannabis and depression are significantly linked and that preventing the use of Cannabis clearly can decrease the number of depression cases as well as other mental disorders associated with the drug. A group of British scientists were responsible for conducting the third investigation. In this particular study, 1000 people, whose ages were no more than 25 years, were involved. According to the results, the greater number of people that developed depression and schizophrenia came from those who took Cannabis when they were still teenagers.

All these results clearly establish the connection between Cannabis and depression. Although all three cases do not explicitly mention the drug to be the primary cause of the illness, it is largely considered as a major risk factor that predisposes people to depression. Because of this, a lot of people believe that addressing the problem of drug use, especially in teenagers, can significantly reduce cases of depression as well as schizophrenia in adults.

Cannabis has been known to induce quite a number of unwanted side effects. Short term side effects include somatic, psychoactive as well as neurological effects. Unfortunately, because of laws prohibiting research on long-term use, there is very little progress on the study of Cannabis long term side effects.

The few data on long term use of Cannabis is a mix of studies from human cases and animal subjects. So far, here are some of the conditions and disorders associated with Cannabis long term side effects.

Lower IQ
According to a study published in the “Canadian Medical Journey” in 2002, smoking 5 or more marijuana joints per week had a negative effect on global IQ score. People who took Cannabis frequently had a harder time remembering things and processing information. This is because the cannabinoids in marijuana restrain the secretion of several neurotransmitters in the hippocampus, lowering neuronal activity in this area of the brain. This eventually leads to a decrease of cellular activities associated with formation of memory.

Anxiety, Psychosis and Depression
Mostly associated with withdrawal symptoms than cannabis long term side effects, anxiety, psychosis, and depression result from prolonged exposure to cannabinoids, particularly to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (?9-THC, commonly called simply THC). Since THC is largely responsible for the high feeling, the altered state of consciousness and euphoria that Cannabis users experience, it affects the mood and disposition of those who take it.

Depending on the mental state of the user, the potency and amount of the drug taken, frequency of intake, and the user’s metabolism, Cannabis (as well as withdrawal from it) can cause the brain to experience the exact opposites of the euphoric state, which are depression, anxiety and psychosis.

Decreased Fertility
In animal subjects, administration of high levels of THC showed a significant decrease in testosterone levels, sperm production, sperm motility, and sperm viability. In females, it interrupts the menstrual cycle and messes up hormone levels for the sex organs. In other words, one of the cannabis long term side effects is a significant decrease in fertility in both male and female Cannabis users.

Pregnancy
For those who used Cannabis during pregnancy, cannabis long term side effects are observed in infants. Aside from growth impairment, permanent cognitive deficiencies were seen in the children of Cannabis-using mothers.
Other studies even associate long term use of Cannabis by mothers with children’s anxiety disorders, hyperactivity and inability to interact socially with others.

The use of cannabis, marijuana, THC, weed, or pot may stay in your body system for weeks to months from the last time you smoked or ate cannabis. At some point in life, you might be subject to a drug test and, due to its lingering characteristic, you might fail the test. This is because cannabis and THC is fat soluble. This means that it can be stored in the fatty tissues of the different organs of the body. From these organs, the cannabis is slowly released and metabolized and then it is cleared from a person’s system.

Cannabis detoxification actually happens for a very long time if you allow it to naturally leave your system. To have cannabis detoxification quickly and rid your body of THC, you need to use a number of cannabis detoxifying products that would clean out your hair, blood and urine of the evidence of cannabis use.

Cannabis detoxification can be done with the use of some products that you use at home for the kitchen. The first product is apple cider vinegar. The chemicals in the vinegar can actually breakdown the fat cell walls in your body and clean your body of anything stored in it, which includes THC and other evidences of cannabis use. You have to dilute about two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in eight ounces of water.
You drink this mixture three to four times a day for three weeks.

Another ingredient to use is cranberry juice. It is a great diuretic that works well with other processes like exercise to get completely detoxified.
THC stored in the fat cells can be removed with exercise as the movement that burns fat also takes away evidence of cannabis use.

Cannabis detoxification works well with drinking a lot of water, too. Eating a diet of low fat, low sodium and low carbohydrate foods also makes the detoxification process go faster. On this note, you have to eat 5 to 6 equally proportioned meals a day. By eating a lot, you trigger your body system to metabolize faster as well. It burns fat faster and uses these fat and carbohydrate deposits for energy. You can exercise longer to burn more of the fat where THC and cannabis is stored. Drink the apple cider vinegar solution as well as the cranberry juice. With these practices and foods, you actually remove evidence of cannabis use through your sweat and urine.

Side effects of eating cannabis

From its dictionary definition, cannabis refers to a plant of the genus cannabis.
It has the look of a coarse bushy annual that has palmate leaves and clusters of green flowers.
Simply stated, it is the plant referred to as marijuana.

The consumption or use of cannabis has both psychological and physiological effects on the body.
Even if there are positive effects, there are also bad side effects to eating cannabis.
With regard to the benefits that one gets, eating cannabis can cure nausea, pain as well as alleviate the pain that some chronic illnesses have.
Because it affects each person differently, some people can be allergic to the cannabis and marijuana.
Another good effect that cannabis has is that it lifts a person’s mood, which then brings about a reduction in stress.

On the side effects of eating cannabis, these can be divided into short term effects and long term effects.
The short term physical effects that the consumption of cannabis has are:

Increased heart rate

Red eyes

Dry mouth

Sensation of hot or cold hands and feet

The psychoactive effects are generally considered to be on the positive side, but one of the psychoactive effects that can be seen as side effects of eating cannabis is that to somebody who is unaccustomed to the use of marijuana, it can bring about feelings of extreme anxiety and paranoia.
Further experiments on animal and human tissue with regard to the use of cannabis have shown that it disrupts short term memory.
In the long run, extended use of this drug could bring about the side effects of eating cannabis wherein it blocks off cellular processes that are intertwined with the formation of memory.

While the eating of cannabis is made easier by it being made into a bud butter that can be mixed to other food items like in the making of banana cake or chocolate brownies, you do have to make a careful consideration as to what food you add this ingredient to.
The side effects of eating cannabis may seem like minor effects that one can deal with, but if they are experienced a lot, they can have lasting negative effects.
The feeling of having a tense and racy heart is not a good feeling.
Chronic coughing can also occur and, just like the common cold, nothing is more bothersome than a sickness that can’t be cured.
